Brookings, we are told, is the banana belt of the Oregon coast. Yesterday was certainly the warmest we have seen in a long time and today is supposed to be a repeat, so we decided to stay over another night.
When I looked out this morning, I saw these two small Coast Guard cutters coming in. My guess is that they were just practicing, but maybe not.
During our walk on the beach yesterday, we met a woman who gave us some tips on good places to eat. Her first recommendation was Zola's, and she seemed mildly annoyed when I told her we had already been there, but she went on to also recommend the Vista Pub. Mostly, they sell a variety of beers, but they also have some food. According to her, their burgers have made the place a favorite with the local foodies.
We tried them for lunch and she was right. It may not have been the best burger I have ever eaten, but it was the best that I can remember. A third of a pound on a correspondingly large bun, my first reaction was, man that's a lot of food. I needn't have worried. Even Nancy had no trouble finishing hers off. Yum, as Rachel Ray likes to say.
We took another long walk on the beach this afternoon. I had only taken a few pictures when my low battery light started to blink, so I turned off my camera. Near the end of our walk, a couple of things caught my eye and, fortunately, I had enough juice left to shoot them.
After our walk, we were sitting in the cab of the RV watching the sun go down when a Coast Guard helicopter flew right over us and out to sea. A minute or two later, a cutter left port, as well. They rendezvoused a few miles out and began what appeared to be a search and rescue operation which continued until well after sunset. All the while, a horn on the jetty was going off at short intervals. Nancy found the horn disturbing as she didn't know what it meant. I simply found it annoying. Again, it struck me as a drill, but I really don't know.
